Owl Just Hangin’ Out

It’s not every day you see an owl in broad daylight, usually they are seen around dusk. We have them come here often, probably hoping I might forget to close the chickens in for the night. So far, no luck.

Think a Fence Will Keep your Pets Safe from Predators?

As you can see, NO! A coyote can scale a 7 foot block wall with ease, for a bobcat… even easier.  I’ve seen it many times… and our hobby farm is in a residential area within the Phoenix city limits.  We keep our small dog in a covered pen to do his business.

This is why…

The Coyote especially, is not afraid of humans, so don’t think for a minute if you’re standing in the yard with your dog it’s safe. It’s not, a coyote came over our block wall and grabbed one of my chickens within 15 feet of where I was standing.  Keep in mind, Coyotes and Bobcats are most active hunters at dawn and dusk. However, I’ve eye witnessed predator attacks (poultry) right here at TBN Ranch late morning and mid-afternoon.

Keep your pets safe, it’s a jungle out there! Build an enclosed safe zone for small-medium dogs and keep your cats indoors.

The Cowboy

Horse country in rural Rio Verde, Arizona is where this cowboy and my good friend makes a living as a horse trainer and farrier. His many saddles from way back when are quite the sight to see, each with purpose, stories to tell, and all incredibly rich with history. Cattle drives, ranching, rodeo, competitions, and training in many parts of the West.

I’ve always admired those who find their God given place in life and actually live it. Often we are discouraged from following our heart.  I must admit, I’d have 27 reasons for argument if my kid said “I’m going to be a cowboy instead of going to college!”  There’s a lesson to be learned here, we all have a calling, what ever that is, don’t sell yourself short, it might just be who you really are.

Arizona Sunset

They say there’s nothing like an Arizona sunset…  I’l let you be the judge of that.
I remember not understanding the term ‘purple mountains’ when I was a kid, well, here they are!

Desert Monsoon Sky and Mountains

Monsoon not only brings a bit of relief from the wicked heat, but the prettiest skies ever. Then the sun comes back out and darn near bakes us alive!

Four months of 115+ degrees isn’t easy to take, but eight months of mild temperatures and endless sun definitely makes it worth it.

Who Visited the Brass Armadillo Antique Mall?

Pawn Stars Mark! He was spotted here on July 27th at 9am, how cool is that?

We may live in the desert, but that doesn’t mean a little grass and a few pine trees are out of the question. We are green in a small area off the back porch, but the rest of the property is desert and cactus. Love my pine trees! They were only five feet tall 10 years ago.

Arrowhead Lake, Glendale, Arizona

An incredible location in Glendale, Arizona just off the Loop 101 and 59th Ave. Hard to believe there’s a gem like this in the Sonoran Desert among the Saguaro Cactus and desert terrain. A stunning oasis indeed, but is it affordable to the avarage Joe? Well… probably not.

Almost every lake front home has a boat dock to fish off and at Christmas there’s a light parade open to all who have a boat to participate in. Now this is what I call paradise!

logoSaguaro Lake is set in the Sonoran Desert and is rimmed with canyon walls. As the name implies, the shores of the lake are studded with majestic Saguaro cactus. Try the upper reaches of the lake (east-end) for more seclusion. Boat access camping at the east end of the lake. Tour-boat trips are available on the Desert Belle… Learn More

Stop at the Lakeshore Restaurant for a bite to eat, what a treat! Can’t beat the view. Reasonably priced and the food is very good.

Wickenburg, Arizona

Image result for wickenburg azA quaint downtown, ample local restaurants, shopping, and friendly merchants. But so many of the houses in town perhaps once considered charming, are slowly turning into run-down eye sores. The town itself is nice, fun to visit, but if your looking for real estate there, in-town looks better in the rear view mirror.

Mines, mines and more mines in the surrounding desert of Wickenburg. Kinda cool you might think… until you learn they are OPEN mines. Here’s a few picks I took of one, was able to walk right up to it, no fence. How far down does it go? Well let me put it this way, I couldn’t see the bottom, and I wasn’t getting any closer to the edge for fear I’d fall to China. Danger!

Cool little village near the edge of town, or at least it could be. Since it was built not much going on, lots of potential, unfortunately a ton of vacant store fronts.

Wicked Monsoon Storm Hits Home

This was our shedrow barn after it was hit by a Microburst during the 2014 Monsoon season. It was lifted off the ground and launched atop a seven foot block wall. Our landscaping, trees, and shrubs were all uprooted, fences and gates were completely destroyed.  Fortunately the house had only minor damage. The clean up took 2 months, and the price tag exceeded a whopping $35,000.

Microburst AZ Blog 4

Thank goodness, just two months before the storm, we sold all our horses.  The barn was only occupied by a flock of hens who were merely startled by the sound of wind and twisting metal, none were injured.
